What is Yuval Noah Harari’s background?
Yuval Noah Harari is a professor at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University. He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Oxford and specializes in global history. After Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind and Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, 21 Lessons for the Twenty-First Century is his third best-selling book. Over 20 million copies of the three novels have been sold worldwide.
While I haven’t read his other two works, they are well-known for outlining where we came from and where we are going as a species. As a result, his third book should drive us to consider current storylines, the issues that mankind faces, and how we may best prepare ourselves and our children right now.

What will you learn in 21 Lessons for the Twenty-First Century?
Dr. Harari identifies three major difficulties or worries facing humanity in the twenty-first century. These are they:
- Nuclear Warfare and Weapons of Mass Destruction
- Some of the “learning” lead to international wars. This is a serious possibility because of our disagreements and our incapacity to coexist in certain circumstances.
- The connection between artificial intelligence and biotechnology has progressed.
- Due to increasing capabilities and the elimination of human mistake, their merging may result in the widespread replacement of current occupations.
- Their capacity to comprehend us and our aspirations may lead to a rise in disputes over our existing notions of liberty and equality.
- Climate Change or Ecological Catastrophe
Lessons & Narratives
The 21 “lessons” symbolize societal issues such as war, religion, and immigration. They explain how each may contribute to one of the three primary difficulties or be part of the solution. These are not the solutions. You should not read this book in order to discover any. You will, however, discover a framework for analyzing the progress we make in each of the three areas listed above. Dr. Harari states these “lessons” “seek to provoke deeper thought and enable readers engage in some of our time’s significant discussions.” (4).
Harari also questions the “tales” or narratives that have molded the many glasses through which we see the world. Religions, morals, and the beliefs with which we have formed our own story for our lives and their purpose are examples.
Furthermore, Harari claims that the defects in our political institutions must be investigated. Liberal democracy has long been shown to be the best suited political system for supporting the growth of our species and attaining coexistence (as opposed to Communism and Fascism). Nonetheless, it contains problems in how it approaches each of Dr. Harari’s three primary difficulties.
To understand the events of this century objectively, we must be ready to identify the errors in our society’s narratives. Then we’ll be able to devise strategies for overcoming or even avoiding these three major problems.

Dr. Harari’s dissection of the limits of our worldviews in 21 Lessons for the Twenty-First Century was fascinating to me. This book serves as a reminder that we interpret news based on the narrative we choose to follow (religion, political party, and so on). They all have defects, and we can only contribute to the most important dialogues of our time if we recognize them.
This book will push you to think about all of the stories that shape who we are and how we make decisions. You’re in the business of fixing problems if you’re an ambitious entrepreneur. As a result, you should study Dr. Harari’s work and learn how to interpret the world in order to solve our species’ most serious limits.
